CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES 1% PAYROLL TAX LAW
The City Council of the City of Jersey City unanimously approved its proposed 1% payroll tax on all non-resident employees at the second public hearing on the law on November 20, 2018.
The 1% payroll tax will be used to offset a reduction in State aid for the City’s public schools. Newark, NJ, passed similar legislation with the permission of the State legislature earlier.
The tax must be absorbed by the employers who face fines and penalties if the proper amount of taxes are not submitted quarterly to the City. The law is proposed to go in effect on January 1, 2019.
